Resonance Chamber

This video explores the nature of perception as a resonance phenomenon. As put forward by such thinkers as Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, as well as Brian Massumi and others. Within the post-semiotics of Guattari, content and expression can be delimited only as a reciprocal presupposition, where although designated as different, content and expression only exist as oppositions to each other. Paul Churchland's 'Semantic State Space' is a model for asygnifing semiotics based on Feed forward neural networks and interpreting distributed representations
The electromagnetic resonation in the visible frequencies are transcoded
through the black hole of the eye. The lens bends the waves into
electro-chemicals of the rods and cones. The chemical reaction
produces a signal, captured through a multi-layered neural net,
filtering the signals into trajectories within a larger network
of the visual cortex. The process is further transcoded into
the semiotic state space, a virtual relational territory defined
by it's own past history and immediate responses. Felix Guattari
has defined subjectivity as a resonance phenomenon.
The complex dynamic expressions of the neural network of the cerebral
cortex is the sensitivity displayed by complex adaptive systems
operating at or near chaos. The many subharmonics of brain activity
is largely unconscious. Only a small percentage of the neural light
show breaks the threshold into consciousness. A thought, a sensation,
a feeling is brought into sharp relief until it merges back into
the background noise. The actual dynamic core of our perception
is a distributed representation:an aggregate of molecular activities.
The distributed representation of neural networks is one of the
strongest arguments for an asygnifying semiotics.
The model works like this: there are many neural activation patterns
that constantly light up the cerebral cortex. Most of these patterns
are subconscious operating below our conscious recognition. Only
a small percentage of this becomes a thought or perception through
the rich harmonics of neural activation patterns creating the background
from which our sense of self emerges. Guattari sees this process
as basically pre-linguistic. The mechanisms at work operate in
many other domains other than language. In this sense, language
becomes a kind of cognitive mapping of activation territories,
a rythm.
"The face itself is redundancy. It is itself in redundancy with
the redundancies of significance or frequency, and those of resonance
or subjectivity. The face constructs the wall that the signifier
needs in order to bounce off of; it constitutes the wall of the
signifier, the frame or screen."
